A Late Summer Heat Wave Bakes Italy, France and Spain

In France, Spain and Italy, residents and tourists did their best to avoid scorching temperatures — again.

Extreme heat has turned much of the country into a tinderbox. More than 350 fires have broken out in the past five days, the government said.

A summer of extreme weather continued as residents coped with oppressive heat across a large stretch of the nation’s midsection.

The storm was less than 200 miles east of Texas early Tuesday, and expected to move inland later in the day.

Heavy rain and snow over the winter helped alleviate the state’s long dry spell.
