Gusts up to 70 miles an hour are possible over the same wide area from Mississippi to the Atlantic where another storm system earlier in the week spawned 20 reports of tornadoes.
More than a foot of snow is expected in parts of Michigan and Wisconsin, forecasters said. Severe weather, with the possibility of tornadoes, will sweep states from Mississippi to the Carolinas.
While conditions will be calmer in the Southeast U.S., more rain is expected in Maine, and more snow in parts of the West. The New York region will face brutal winds.
