A high school in Bushwick is coaxing teenagers into a long-neglected pool, turning nonswimmers into competitors — and possibly a summer job in a lifeguard chair.
Amid an increase in shark sightings, lifeguards are increasing patrols and adopting new strategies, but marine experts say “the danger to people is infinitesimal.”
The city has canceled free swim lessons and private swim programs are feeling the squeeze from a lack of lifeguards. One expert said: “Some of those kids are going to drown.”
