Wie West, one of the savviest stars women’s golf has ever had, intends to step away after the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. She could be done as soon as Friday.
Before the U.S. Women’s Open, the reigning champion talked with The Times about the importance of taking time off, the joy of wind and why the women’s tour must play golf’s iconic courses.
The golfer announced last week that she would play her last tournament for the foreseeable future at Pine Needles. “This week, I’m just soaking it all in,” she said.
She was one of 13 women who founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1950, though her legacy lay in her tutoring countless women, from duffers to fledgling pros.
