After 90 Years, a Menorah That Symbolized Defiance Is Rekindled in Germany

A 1931 photograph of a menorah on a windowsill also showed a Nazi flag in the street outside. This Hanukkah the menorah returned to Germany.

Only about two-thirds of local departments reported hate crimes last year, down from more than 90 percent the year before.

Prosecutors lodged a total of 305 criminal counts against the defendant who the police say opened fire in a nightclub serving L.G.B.T.Q. patrons.

The man, who was accused of killing 10 Black people in June, was charged on 25 counts, including murder, domestic terrorism and hate crimes.

Thomas James, a Navy officer, knocked down the attacker along with an Army veteran.
