Audiences were eager to humbly suffer the stinging quips tossed out by the towering figure that was Barry Humphries’s creation.

Bewigged, bejeweled and bejowled, Mr. Humphries’s creation was one of the longest-lived characters ever channeled by a single performer.

Washington was his main quarry. Did he have any writers? “Oh, yes — 100 in the Senate and 435 in the House of Representatives.”

The comedian, at 96, is happy to inspire a new generation to make their own Hitler jokes.

I’m not sure there was anything he could have done to rise to the occasion given his apparent inability to evolve as a comic.
