Columbia, Cooper Union, Cornell and University of Pennsylvania were among half a dozen universities under investigation for harassment complaints on campus.
Students rallied after the university suspended two groups from holding campus events until the end of the semester, and faculty members said they would walk out in protest.
The universities are trying to address criticism by banning pro-Palestinian student groups, condemning slogans and starting task forces to address antisemitism.
